ADULT MALE VICTIM FOUND IN FATAL HOUSE FIRE
A male victim was found in the basement of the home that was destroyed by fire on Champion Hill Road in Muncy Valley early Tuesday. According to the Sun Gazette, Muncy Valley Fire volunteers were dispatched about 2:15am to the Davidson Township blaze and saw the glow from the fire through the fog as they approached and found the home partially collapsed. Volunteers from multiple companies worked for about an hour to control and knock down the fire and protect other buildings on the property. Officals discovered the body of an adult male inside the home about 7am, after which the Sullivan County Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner were called to the scene. The identity of the victim was not released and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
WOMAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT FOR UNDER-RINGING ITEMS
A Selinsgrove woman was arrested for under ringing items at the Wal-mart on North Susquehanna Trail at least ten times from September 10th through November 17th. According to State police at Selinsgrove, 45 year old Velma Day would stack items and ring them through the scanner together, the woman alleged that she didn’t know the top items weren’t ringing up on the register. Day was charged with misdemeanor retail theft-under-ring and has a preliminary hearing on January 6th in Northumberland County Court.
TWO AREA BANKS TO MERGE IN 2025
Northwest Bancshares, Inc. the bank holding company for Northwest Bank, and Penns Woods Bancorp, Inc. the multi-bank holding company of Jersey Shore State Bank and Luzerne Bank, jointly announced yesterday that they have entered into a definitive Agreement and Plan of Merger through which Northwest will acquire Penns Woods in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately 270 point 4 million dollars. According to the Standard Journal, the combined banks will enhance Northwest’s presence in the Commonwealth, adding 24 branches to the network in seven counties – including Lycoming, Clinton and Montour. The companies expect to complete the transaction in the third quarter of 2025, and will become one of America’s top 100 largest banks.
REDUCED VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES FOR RETIREES
Retired persons with a qualifying income can now get a reduction in their vehicle registration fee. According to North Central PA dot com, retirees earning up to 29 thousand 9hundred and six, are eligible for the benefit a significant 34 dollar savings. The applicant must be listed as an owner on the passenger car or truck’s registration and only one vehicle per qualified applicant may be registered for the reduced fee. CAR ACCIDENT KILLS SELINSGROVE MAN
An accident occurred early Monday this week and took the life of a 47 year old man from Selinsgrove. According to North Central PA dot com, State police at Selinsgrove say Robert M. Romig was traveling north along Routes 11-15 in Monroe Township around 5:15am when his Ford F-150XLT went over the concrete median crossed the interstate and hit a utility pole. He was transported to WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg and died from his injuries around 6:15am December 16th. Romig had been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
TRUCK CARRYING EGGS OVERTURNS IN NUMIDIA
A tractor trailer hauling eggs overturned on Route 42 near Numidia Monday causing a traffic tie up as crews continue to work to clean the spill. According to media outlets the snowy conditions contributed to the crash that sheared off a utility pole, brought down wires and temporarily closed the road. The truck had been heading north and failed to navigate a left curve, sliding off the right side of the roadway down an embankment. The driver was wearing a seatbelt in the crash and climbed from the wreckage on his own. Catawissa Hose Company assisted with traffic control after the crash and urge caution in the area today.
TWO CU UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS GAIN ACCREDITATION
The Commonwealth University-Lock Haven and CU-Mansfield University Police Departments have both recently earned accreditation from the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association through its Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC). According to a press release, CU-Bloomsburg University Police Department had previously earned accreditation. There are approximately 1,100 police departments in the state of Pennsylvania – 177 are accredited and only 10 are departments at institutions of higher education. The departments will be re-evaluated in three years to show they remains in compliance with the current 137 standards they have achieved.
GREENWAY GRANTS AWARDED
Jersey Shore Borough is one of several recipients who will share 40 thousand dollars in 2024-2025 Susquehanna Greenway Mini-Grants. According to the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, the funding can be used by the recipients for outreach and education, wayfinding and signage, and trails and active transportation marking. Jersey Shore officials say the 10 thousand dollars will be used for a sign project to be utilized by the residents of the borough.
