FATAL ACCIDENT AT LYCO-NORRY LINE

There was a fatal accident yesterday afternoon on Route 405 at the Lycoming-Northumberland County line.  According to the Sun Gazette, state police say the one car accident occurred about 2:45pm when the male driver from the Shamokin area, who was not wearing a seatbelt, veered off the road and went through a yard before going over an embankment and landing on the car’s roof.  After emergency responders arrived, they recovered the victim who had been partially ejected from the car and took him to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport.  The Lycoming County Coroner, Charles E. Kiessling Jr, was on the scene and said they are seeking to notify family members of the victim before they release the man’s identity.  Montgomery, Clinton Township, Warrior Run Area and Muncy Area also responded to the crash scene.

TWO ARRESTED FOR ID THEFT IN SELINSGROVE

Two people from Allentown are accused of using a stolen credit card in Selinsgrove to purchase 5 thousand dollars worth of hot water heaters, copper wire and flooring from the local Lowe’s store in November.  According to the Daily Item, Luis Bueno and Berenice Lantigua were seen on surveillance video making purchases and then again a few days later at another Lowes in Carbon County where they were confronted by loss prevention officers.  Both are jailed and charged with theft by deception and identity theft.

STATE FUNDING FOR RAIL IMPROVEMENTS IN PA

PennDOT has announced 55 million dollars in funding for 30 rail freight improvement projects statewide.  According to a press release, rail projects in Northumberland and Schuylkill counties are receiving funds. North Shore Railroad will receive $1.8 million to rehabilitate its mainline, and Clark’s Feed Mills will get $2.5 million to expand railcar storage and construct unloading equipment.  In addition, over 600 thousand dollars are for rail projects in Schuylkill County.  The funds are set to enhance infrastructure, support local economies, and improve connections across Pennsylvania’s rail network.

BEAR HARVEST NUMBERS

The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s revealed their preliminary bear harvest information  on their data webpage this week.  Hunters in the Commonwealth took more than 2,600 black bears this fall.  The heaviest bear this year weighed 774 pounds and was harvested by Scott Price of Madison Township, Lackawanna County, while hunting in Monroe County. Bear totals per county include 161 in Tioga, 156 in Clinton, 148 in Lycoming, 131 in Bradford and 108 in Potter.

TEN YEAR OLD MISSING IN SUNBURY SAFELY FOUND

A 10-year-old boy who was reported missing has been found in Sunbury. The Daily Item reports the boy left his home on North 11th Street in Sunbury on Thursday night and police were searching for him early this morning. Emergency dispatchers say the boy has been located. Sunbury police were assisted by several police departments in that search.

FLORIDA TRUCK DRIVER DIES IN I-80 CRASH

A truck driver from Florida died in a crash on I-80 in Clinton County December 14th.  According to North Central PA dot com, 54 year old Lloyd Petri was traveling west on the interstate when his truck struck the crash cushion of the guide rail at mile marker 192 in Greene Township.  About 30 years of the rail were destroyed by the truck as it continued along the interstate about 30 feet and came to a stop aftert overturning on the median.  Petri sustained fatal injuries in the crash and EMS crews who responded to the scene were rendered unnecessary.

TRIAL CONTINUED FOR MAN WHO STOLE DATA FROM GEISINGER

A man who was indicted for illegally accessing personal data of 1.28 million Geisinger patients last January had his trial continued by Chief U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann.  According to the News Item, Max Vance, also known as Andre J. Burk, also has arrest warrants and a restraining order issued against him in South Carolina, and police say he previously had possession of a ghost gun, numerous fake IDs and a machine to make them.  Geisinger said no insurance information, credit card or bank account numbers, or Social Security numbers were inappropriately accessed by Vance, however, the hospital system, along with another defendant, are being sued in a class action suit as a result of the breach of other forms of personal data.

FREE CONCEALED CARRY COURSE IN DANVILLE

There will be a firearms safety and concealed carry seminar next week in Danville hosted by the Montour County Sheriff’s Office.  According to the Daily Item, the event is open to the public, not just Montour County residents and is free to attend.  Topics discussed will include carrying, storage, proper holster choices and more.  The seminar will be held at 5:30pm December 27th  in conference room B at the Montour County Administration Center on East  Front Street in Danville.

SHOTS FIRED IN MOUNT CARMEL

Route 54 was closed for a few hours last night after police say shots were fired around the 300 block of Colonial Avenue around 10pm.  According to the News Item, Mount Carmel police responded to the area and removed a male and female from the residence there.  They hung caution tape around a vehicle at the scene and continued the investigation outside of the home, but no injuries were reported.  Colonial Avenue reopened after midnight.

TWO MEN STOLE CASH FROM ATM USING MALWARE

Police are seeking two men who stole over 48 thousand dollars from an ATM machine November 7th in Loyalsock Township.  According to state police at Montoursville, two Hispanic males broke into the drive-thru ATM at Service 1st Federal Credit Union on Westminster Drive between 11pm and 4:30am.  Police say the suspects in a silver Toyota Corolla pulled up to the machine and used malware to cause the ATM to dispense the cash, called “jackpotting”.  If you have information about the theft or the suspects contact PSP Montoursville at 570-368-5700.

NEW POTATO PRODUCTS AT FARM SHOW IN 2025

Potato donuts are coming to the PA Farm Show.  According to North Central PA dot com, in addition to fresh cut fries with cheese bacon & ranch, the Pennsylvania Co-Operative Potato Growers will also offer three flavors of the fresh potato donuts at the 109th annual event.  They will be available at PCPG’s stand located near the 1000 pound butter sculpture at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.  The PCPG is a non-profit organization serving as a vital link between the state’s potato growers and buyers. The Farm show runs from January 4th through the 11th this year. Get information farm show dot org.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SING IN PENNSDALE

The traditional Pennsdale Friends Meeting annual candlelight Carol sing will take place Sunday, December 22nd at 8pm at the Pennsdale Quaker meeting house.  According to pennsdale friends meeting dot org, the tradition began over 75 years ago when the Nicholson family gathered outside the church to sing carols for Christmas and many friends joined them, eventually moving indoors and becoming a public event to which the entire community is now invited.  The 225-year-old meeting house is located at 443 Village Road in Pennsdale.

PAROLEE SEEN ON TRAIL CAMERA WITH GUN

A 24 year old man was apprehended by police after he was seen on a trail camera holding a shotgun in late November moments before he allegedly stole it.  According to State police at Towanda, parolee Darrin Stroud, was seen holding the weapon on the images from the camera and witnesses said he posseeed the gun and shot at crows while out on the trail.  Stroud was charged December 9th and is being charged with first-degree felony prohibited possession of a firearm. He is being held on $150,000 monetary bail.

TWO ALARM FIRE IN DUNNSTABLE TOWNSHIP

A carport in Dunnstable Township burned down December 12th in a two alarm fire.  According to the Lock Haven Express, multiple companies responded to the blaze at 231 Elk Lane, and command closed down nearby Plum Run Road as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.  Despite the cold temperatures the firefighters got the incident under control even though the structure was a complete loss.

VICTIM IN MUNCY VALLEY HOUSE FIRE IDENTIFIED

The Muncy Valley man who died in a house fire this week has been identified by the Sullivan County Coroner.  According to the Sun Gazette, 60 year old Curtis Armstrong was found after firefighters worked to knock down the fire at the man’s home on Champion Hill Road in Davidson Township Tuesday morning at around 2:15am. Multiple companies responded to the blaze that destroyed the home,  the first floor collapsing as crews arrived on the scene.  Armstrong’s body was discovered in the home around 7am.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

LYCO PAINT THE PLOW WINNER ANNOUNCED

PennDOT has named the Lycoming County winner in their seasonal Paint the Plow contest, a statewide outreach aimed at promoting winter driving safety and fostering appreciation for high school art programs.  According to PennDOT, Montgomery Junior/Senior High School won the region’s contest, which was determined by a panel of judges. It depicts a family of polar bears traveling through snow and ice on one side of the V plow, the other side depicts the school’s mascot.  The painted plow will be on display all year at PennDOT’s Lycoming County Maintenance Office, located at 715 Jordan Avenue, Montoursville. ADULT MALE VICTIM FOUND IN FATAL HOUSE FIRE

A male victim was found in the basement of the home that was destroyed by fire on Champion Hill Road in Muncy Valley early Tuesday.  According to the Sun Gazette, Muncy Valley Fire volunteers were dispatched about 2:15am to the Davidson Township blaze and saw the glow from the fire through the fog as they approached and found the home partially collapsed.  Volunteers from multiple companies worked for about an hour to control and knock down the fire and protect other buildings on the property.  Officals discovered the body of an adult male inside the home about 7am, after which the Sullivan County Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner were called to the scene.  The identity of the victim was not released and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT FOR UNDER-RINGING ITEMS

A Selinsgrove woman was arrested for under ringing items at the Wal-mart on North Susquehanna Trail at least ten times from September 10th through November 17th.  According to State police at Selinsgrove, 45 year old Velma Day would stack items and ring them through the scanner together, the woman alleged that she didn’t know the top items weren’t ringing up on the register. Day was charged with misdemeanor retail theft-under-ring and has a preliminary hearing on January 6th in Northumberland County Court.

TWO AREA BANKS TO MERGE IN 2025

Northwest Bancshares, Inc. the bank holding company for Northwest Bank, and Penns Woods Bancorp, Inc. the multi-bank holding company of Jersey Shore State Bank and Luzerne Bank, jointly announced yesterday that they have entered into a definitive Agreement and Plan of Merger through which Northwest will acquire Penns Woods in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately 270 point 4 million dollars. According to the Standard Journal, the combined banks will enhance Northwest’s presence in the Commonwealth, adding 24 branches to the network in seven counties – including Lycoming, Clinton and Montour.  The companies expect to complete the transaction in the third quarter of 2025, and will become one of America’s top 100 largest banks.

REDUCED VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES FOR RETIREES

Retired persons with a qualifying income can now get a reduction in their vehicle registration fee.  According to North Central PA dot com, retirees earning up to 29 thousand 9hundred and six, are eligible for the benefit a significant 34 dollar savings.  The applicant must be listed as an owner on the passenger car or truck’s registration and only one vehicle per qualified applicant may be registered for the reduced fee.  Go to PA dot gov under services to find out more. 

CAR ACCIDENT KILLS SELINSGROVE MAN

An accident occurred early Monday this week and took the life of a 47 year old man from Selinsgrove.  According to North Central PA dot com, State police at Selinsgrove say Robert M. Romig was traveling north along Routes 11-15 in Monroe Township around 5:15am when his Ford F-150XLT went over the concrete median crossed the interstate and hit a utility pole.  He was transported to WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg and died from his injuries around 6:15am December 16th. Romig  had been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

TRUCK CARRYING EGGS OVERTURNS IN NUMIDIA

A tractor trailer hauling eggs overturned on Route 42 near Numidia Monday causing a traffic tie up as crews continue to work to clean the spill.  According to media outlets the snowy conditions contributed to the crash that sheared off a utility pole, brought down wires and temporarily closed the road.  The truck had been heading north and failed to navigate a left curve, sliding off the right side of the roadway down an embankment.  The driver was wearing a seatbelt in the crash and climbed from the wreckage on his own.  Catawissa Hose Company assisted with traffic control after the crash and urge caution in the area today.

TWO CU UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS GAIN ACCREDITATION

The Commonwealth University-Lock Haven and CU-Mansfield University Police Departments have both recently earned accreditation from the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association through its Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC). According to a press release, CU-Bloomsburg University Police Department had previously earned accreditation.  There are approximately 1,100 police departments in the state of Pennsylvania – 177 are accredited and only 10 are departments at institutions of higher education. The departments will be re-evaluated in three years to show they remains in compliance with the current 137 standards they have achieved.

GREENWAY GRANTS AWARDED

Jersey Shore Borough is one of several recipients who will share 40 thousand dollars in 2024-2025 Susquehanna Greenway Mini-Grants.  According to the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, the funding can be used by the recipients for outreach and education, wayfinding and signage, and trails and active transportation marking. Jersey Shore officials say the 10 thousand dollars will be used for a sign project to be utilized by the residents of the borough.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER THREATENING ROOMATES, POLICE

A Selinsgrove man was taken into custody after he threatened his female roommates with a gun and then also threatened and additionally refused to follow orders from state troopers who arrived in response of the disturbance.  According to North Central PA dot com, 68 year old John Dennison Walter Jr. struggled with police who arrived to the Penn Township Home about 7pm on December 7th who were asking him to give up control of the firearm that he  held concealed in his hand.  State police say they gave Walter 52 verbal commands before they were able to remove the handgun from the man’s grip. No one was injured.  Walter was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault, misdemeanors of terroristic threats, and resisting arrest, his preliminary hearing was scheduled for today.  He is jailed in lieu of 50 thousand dollars bail.

THIEF OF CASH BACK LEFT BEHIND ARRESTED

A man from Milton who took cash from a self check out register accidentally left behind by a customer, has been charged with theft and receiving stolen property.  According to state police, 59 year old Robert M. Byrne Jr took the cash after the victim rang up her items at the Lewisburg Wal-mart and left the self-checkout kiosk without taking her money, police say during the investigation, Byrne was later observed on surveillance cameras taking the money and putting it in his pocket.  Police identified Byrne by his vehicle information and located him parked nearby.  Milton Troopers filed the charges against Byrne.

PUBLIC FEEDBACK NEEDED TO HELP SAVE HELLBENDER

The public is being asked to participate in a public comment about a proposal that the eastern hellbender, a unique salamander, be placed on the endangered species list.  According to the Sun Gazette, data collected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shows that a large portion of the eastern hellbender population is in decline and as an endangered subspecies, would be protected under federal mandates. Hellbenders are the largest of North America’s salamanders, growing up to 29 inches. They can live up to 30 years and spend their entire lives in water and are key indicators of stream and river health.  Go to regulations dot gov (and search docket number FWS-R3-ES-2024-0152) for instructions on how to submit comments.

MOUNT CARMEL CHRISTMAS EVENT SATURDAY

Businesses and area residents in the borough of Mount Carmel will “Light up Oak Street”, and celebrate the Christmas holiday Saturday 5 to 8pm.  According to the News Item, there will be music and entertainment, and attendees can shop at downtown businesses and also decorate holiday ornaments at the Mount Carmel Public Library until 7pm, and hang the completed ornaments on a large Christmas tree outside Tornado Tavern, along with other activities. Organizers say this is a chance to bring the entire community together.

REPEAT SHOPLIFTER ARRESTED AGAIN

A repeat shoplifter has been charged again, this time eluding loss prevention officers at the Williamsport Wegmans for a fourth time and escaping the store before city police arrived.  According to North Central PA dot com, Michelle Lynn Wettlaufer of Muncy was detained  after she attempted to leave the store by the side exit with unscanned items November 30th.  Officials say Wettlaufer allegedly admitted taking of items worth 37 dollars, but gave other false information before running from the office area where she was being questioned.  She remains at large and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. 

NON-CREDIBLE BOMB THREAT IN BELLFONTE

A Bellefonte office building in Centre County received a non-credible bomb threat last Tuesday and the facility was temporarily evacuated out of an abundance of caution.  According to the Lock Haven Express, police investigated at the Willowbank Building that evening after a threat came in via email.  They then cleared the scene and said there were no credible threats by 8:20pm.  The building houses the Centre County Elections Office, and police say the office and ballots were under constant supervision while the building was swept.

PRISON ESCAPEE IN CUSTODY AGAIN

A former Hagerstown, Maryland man was apprehended in November after being on the run from an escape from a Pennsylvania prison for a month.  According to North Central PA dot com, 35 year old Matthew Lee Miles had been held at the Capital Pavilion Residential Reentry Center in Dauphin County and escaped custody October 15th.  Miles was found November 25th and was indicted last week by a federal grand jury on escape charges.  For the escape, Miles could receive an additional five years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

SNOWMOBILE CLASS FOR YOUTH IN JANUARY

An all-day safety course hosted by the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club will be held in Lock Haven coming up January 4th.  According to North Central PA dot com, parents and children can attend the day of the event and sign in before the 8am class that is held at the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club lodge, which is located approximately 6 miles north of Haneyville, PA in Clinton County.  The class is free with lunch provided. IN the event of rideable snow, parents should bring snowmobiles and gear so that the DCNR-specified Optional Performance Test can be administered to the youth students.  Email  [email protected] to pre-register.

EARLY MORNING WEATHER, TRAFFIC WARNINGS

With the winter weather from overnight, I-80 between mile marker 194, the Clinton/Union County line, and mile marker 247, the Columbia/Luzerne County line is temporarily down to 45 mph.  According to PennDOT, trucks are also being asked to avoid Route 54 between Route 487 in Ralpho Township and Route 61 in Mount Carmel Township in Northumberland County.  Penn DOT features color-coded winter conditions online at 511PA dot com.

UNSUCCESSFUL CARJACKER ARRESTED

Police say a Williamsport man was arrested after he attempted to car-jack a woman in the UPMC parking lot in Williamsport, but was unsuccessful.  According to Williamsport Bureau of Police, 42 year old Tyler Scott Pophal approached a woman in her car and grabbed her arm December 9th telling her to leave the vehicle.  Polcie say she did not leave her car and Pophal fled the scene on foot toward Park Avenue.  Shortly after police were called about the incident, they spotted Pophal walking on Banister place and took him into custody.  He is charged with robbery of a motor vehicle, simple assault and more and is being held in liue of 25 thousand dollar bail.

DRIVER WHO CAUSED  FATAL ACCIDENT WILL FACE TRIAL

The man accused of homicide by vehicle for being DUI while driving a ride-share passenger on I-80 in Liberty Township, and crashing, killing them last New Year’s Day, will face trial in Montour County.  According to the Sun Gazette, 45 year old Anthony J. Machi of Muncy, waived his right to a preliminary hearing this week.  Police say Machi was smoking marijuana the day of the accident and was DUI which caused him to lose control of the car while driving, and Yainyles Gomez-Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.  Machi is currently free on bail.

NEW AIRPORT SCHEDULE

A new two year agreement is in place between Williamsport  Municipal Airport Authority and Southern Airways will continue local commercial flight service in our region.  According to the Sun Gazette, new, earlier departure times will be available from Williamsport Regional Airport to Dulles in Washington DC, including two departures daily Monday through Friday.  Weekend service is set to begin in March with one flight each on Saturday and Sunday.

KANSAS MAN ARRESTED FOR HAVING GUN AT HS GAME

Mount Carmel Township police arrested a man from Kansas Thursday afternoon after he tried to enter the Shikellamy,  Mount Carmel high school girls basketball game with a loaded weapon in his coat.  According to the News Item, 42 year old Brett Harris Fatool, told police he realized he mistakenly had the weapon with him after twice setting off a metal detector at the entrance to the gym.  Fatool was charged with felony of firearms not be carried without a license and possession of a weapon on school property. He was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge William Cole and is in jail in lieu of 25 thousand dollars cash bail.

ADULT TEACHER IN CUSTODY FOR CONTACT WITH 13 YEAR-OLD

A 44 year old High School teacher from Georgia is in custody after he fostered an online sexual relationship for 6 months with a 13 year old girl from Lycoming County.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say the girl, who sent a hundred naked pictures to 44 year old Eric Stephen Burton, while he claimed he was 17 years old, discovered he was older than he said after seeing an accidental digital shot of the man’s face.  After learning of the online relationship which had been terminated by then, the girl’s mother filed charges with police in August and Burton was arrested last week in Woodstock, Georgia. He was brought to Williamsport on Wednesday night, arraigned in District court and denied bail.  Burton is incarcerated at Lycoming County Prison.

CHRISTMAS TREE PICK UP SOON IN MAHONING TOWNSHIP

Mahoning Township will start Christmas tree pick up December 30th .  According to the Daily Item, starting the Monday after Christmas, township officials will pick up the curbside trees every Monday and Friday through January 31st.  In order to have the tree taken, it should be on the curb by 7am on the morning of pick up.  Trees will not be picked up if there are stands attached, lights remaining or if it’s wrapped in plastic.

TEEN CHARGED AS AN ADULT IN FATAL ACCIDENT CASE

A 17 year old from Reading, PA will be tried as an adult for the accident in Upper Fairfield Township that killed a 65-year old woman and injured her husband a few miles from their Montoursville home last July.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say Stephen Andrew Yuhasz was driving a 2011 Jeep Grand-Cherokee with a passenger, southbound along Route 87 and attempted to pass another southbound vehicle. He entered the northbound lane, causing the collision with Mark and Kathleen McFadden in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.  Police say Kathleen was killed instantly; Mark was transported to UPMC Williamsport with serious injuries. Yuhasz faces a host of charges including 3rd degree murder, aggravated assault by vehicle, speeding and more.  He is free on a 25 thousand dollar bond and has a preliminary hearing January 13th.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO METH ARREST

Two people were found to have a large amount of methamphetamine after police searched their vehicle following a traffic stop in Shamokin.  According to North Central PA dot com, 54 year old Ricardo Pasarell of Mount Carmel was pulled over November 3rd for an expired temporary registration with passenger, 24 year old Gabrielle Eby of Coal Township, and police noticed the smell of marijuana.  Officers towed the car after questioning both occupants and discovered Pasarell and Eby to both have drugs on their person and after a search warrant was issued, found 53 grams of meth under the seat.  Both face drug charges in Northumberland county court and have separate preliminary hearings.

FCFP GIVES GRANT TO UNION COUNTY NON-PROFIT

The Giving Closet in Union County received a grant from the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania’s Greater Susquehanna Valley Competitive Grant Program that will be used to purchase clothing for children in need.  According to the Daily Item, the non-profit is located at 18 Market St., Lewisburg and will utilize the 5 thousand dollar gift to ensure that the children they serve have access to warm, comfortable, and properly fitting clothing, shoes, and boots.  Recipients of the clothing are families who are enrolled in the Union County Supplemental Food Program.

CHORAL CONCERT IN SUNBURY

The annual Candlelight Concert by the Susquehanna Valley Chorale is Saturday and Sunday at the Zion Lutheran Church on South 5th Street in Sunbury, with a program to focus on love and the idea of human connection.  According to the Daily Item, the presentation will feature the world premiere of a new composition, “So Many Hopes,” by the group’s conductor and music director William Payn. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students and children 12 and younger are free. Go to svcmusic.org for tickets and information.

INFANT INJURED IN DOMESTIC FIGHT

A nine month old child sustained minor injuries during a fight between her parents in Williamsport, and they are both now facing child endangerment charges.  According to North Central PA dot com, police say 22 year old Joyce Ganaway and 24 year old Iyonna Eddins, got into a fight over a phone call while Ganaway held the baby in her left arm.  Eddins fled the scene before the injury was discovered on the child.  Police were then called to the 600 block of Third Avenue by a neighbor who heard the disturbance. The couple is free after both posting 25 thousand dollar bail with a preliminary hearing December 12th. 

THIRD SHOPLIFTING CHARGE FOR MONTOURSVILLE WOMAN

It’s a three-peat for a Montoursville woman who was caught shoplifting from the self-checkout line October 9th from the Walmart in Montoursville.  According to Montoursville Borough Police, Phyllis Marie Wettlaufer of Muncy Valley already has a second case for retail theft open in Lycoming County, but was arrested a third time at Wal-mart after store officials discovered the theft of items worth about 9 dollars.  Wettlaufer is free on $5,000 unsecured bail and has a preliminary hearing December 23rd.

EITC GRANT FOR THE CAC

The community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport, an historic venue and the largest cultural facility in northcentral Pennsylvania, has announced a donation from Journey Bank, through the Education Improvement Tax Credit program or EITC.  According to a press release, funding for the educational programs is derived from various sources, including individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and grants.  Jeff Arnold, Senior Executive Vice President of Journey Bank said the Community Arts Center aligns with their mission to support youth development, and advocate for the importance of music and the arts in our schools and communities. The Community Arts Center is owned and operated by Pennsylvania College of Technology.

PSU FOOTBALL ON THE BIG SCREEN AT THE DISTRICT

The District Cinema in Muncy will show the college football playoff between Penn State and SMU on the movie theater screen Saturday afternoon, December 21st.  According to North Central pa dot com, in a partnership with TNT Sports and Theater Sports Network the game will be shown locally as an immersive experience for 15 dollars per ticket.  Reserve your spot and purchase tickets online at thedistrict.dipsontheatres.com.  ESPN extended its theatrical distribution agreement with Theater Sports Network to televise some college football playoff games in certain venues, including the College Football Playoff National Championship.

ANOTHER SUSPECT IN FATAL SHOOTING CASE IN CUSTODY

A young man from New Jersey was returned to Williamsport Wednesday to answer to charges in the case of 15 year old Ahmeen Palmer who was fatally shot last March in a parking lot in Loyalsock Township.  According to the Sun Gazette, Ibn Hakiem Hunter was originally charged in August with hindering apprehension, riot, recklessly endangering, obstruction of the administration of law and more but those charges were dismissed.  After an investigation, charges were refiled by the Lycoming County District Attorney.  Hunter is allegedly an accomplice to the suspected shooter of Palmer, Ja’hsir Legare, who remains at large.  Hunter was arraigned and committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.

SOUTHSIDE FIRE DEEMED ARSON

The fire that struck a vacant building in South Williamsport last Tuesday has been determined to be arson.  According to the Sun Gazette, a state police fire marshal investigated at the former Merrick Brothers dealership at 1530 W. Southern Ave and said the fire was intentionally set and caused about 50 thousand dollars in damages.  South Williamsport, Williamsport Bureau of Fire, Loyalsock Township, DuBoistown, Old Lycoming Township, Montoursville and Jersey Shore responded to the blaze and took about 20 minutes to get it under control.  No injuries were reported and West Southern avenue opened up after fire police diverted traffic around the scene for about an hour.

POTTERY SALE THURSDAY AT LHU

The 24th Lock Haven University student and alum pottery sale is today with some proceeds benefitting local non-profit H.E.L.P. 4 Pets.  According to the Lock Haven Express, Commonwealth University Art Professor Vance McCoy says students work hard creating pottery each semester and when a piece they made sells, it’s very rewarding.  The event is 10am til 6pm at the LHU Art Annex on Railroad Street in Lock Haven and only cash or checks will be accepted. NOMINATE FAMILIES IN NEED IN COAL TOWNSHIP

The Union Fire Company is taking suggestions to help Coal Township and Shamokin families who deserve Christmas meal baskets, but may not be able to afford the costs this year.  According to the News Item, the department has served the community like this at Christmas for 20 years and say they hope to continue  to reach out to families in need.  The public can suggest families by private messaging the Union Fire Co. on Facebook with a family’s name, their address, phone number, family size and number of children.

SHAMOKIN MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY STRANGULATION

A 39 year old man from Shamokin is facing felony charges of strangulation, misdemeanor simple assault, and summary harassment after a domestic incident at his home November 15th .  According to North Central PA dot com, Christian Medina was allegedly intoxicated when he threatened family members and then self-harm, and barricading himself in, before officers were called to the scene.  Medina was on probation at the time of the incident, and is now awaiting arraignment.

MAN STOPPED ON I-80 WITH THOUSANDS IN ALLEGED DRUG MONEY

A 43 year old man from New Jersey was stopped by state police on I-80 in Turbot Township in October and was found with thousands of dollars in cash from alleged drug deals.  According to the Standard Journal, state police stopped Jose Polo Sanchez near mile marker 212 in Northumberland County for improper sun screening and operating a vehicle without valid inspection.  The cash that the state trooper found in rubber-band secured bundles during a search of the vehicle tested positive for trace amounts of fentanyl and cocaine.  Police say Sanchez admitted the over 14 thousand dollars they discovered was payment for heroin delivery. He remains in Clinton County Correctional Facility on an immigration detainer with a preliminary hearing January 8th.

PAINT THE PLOW WINNERS IN DISTRICT 3

Two Northcentral PA counties have announced the winners to their PennDOT District 3 Paint the Plow safety outreach contest.  According to PennDOT, the program promotes winter driving safety and appreciation for high school art programs and student creativity. Wyalusing Valley High School won the Bradford County contest, depicting a yellow snowplow clearing the roads while a red pick-up truck follows at a safe distance.  North-Penn Liberty High School won the Tioga County contest, depicting two penguins as they slide on a slick road next to a slippery when wet traffic sign. Each area winner’s entry will be painted on a PennDOT snowplow blade and displayed at their respective county maintenance buildings.

CHRISTMAS RELIEF HEADING TO  HURRICANE HELENE VICTIMS

There’s another chance to help Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina for Christmas after a retired Williamsport Bureau of Fire fighter is planning a second trip with toys, Christmas items and other relief supplies.  According to the Sun Gazette, Kevin Breen of Williamsport will once again collect supplies at 127 Reynolds St., South Williamsport with a list on his Facbook page of needed items. Today is the last day to drop off donations from noon til 7pm since they will leave the area afterwards.

THREE INJURED IN OLD LYCO TOWNSHIP ACCIDENT

Police plan to reconstruct a fiery accident that happened early Tuesday morning that seriously injured three young men in the 2300 block of Mill Lane in Old Lycoming Township.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 21 year olds Lawson Stavros, Caden Wilson and a 17 year old male were traveling east on Bottle Run Road in a stolen truck at about 2:15am and went off the road striking trees and going airborne – landing upside down near a residence at 2395 Mill Lane.  Old Lycoming Township first responders were on the scene quickly, extinguishing a fire in the vehicle and extricating the three men from the wreckage within 10 minutes.  Two victims were transferred to the trauma center at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after being transported to UPMC Williamsport.  Police have not said which victim was driving the truck at the time of the crash.

NEW CHARGES FILED AGAINST WILLIAMSPORT MAN

Charges that were previously withdrawn in November during a preliminary hearing, which included indecent assault of a child, were refiled against a Williamsport man December 2nd.  According to North Central PA dot com, 19 year old Bryce Alan Faivre was accused of touching a minor child who came forward to adults last May about the abuse.  Faivre at first denied he had been alone with the girl, but eventually admitted there were times when she was with him without other supervision.

NEW ONLINE PLATFORM IN SHAMOKIN

A centralized website platform has been introduced in Shamokin that will offer Shamokin area businesses and organizations an easy way to streamline their digital opportunities and connect with the community.  According to the News Item, Go Shamokin dot com is also for residents who can explore upcoming events, access a local directory, stay updated with news and announcements, and subscribe to a newsletter.  Downtown Manager Justin Bainbridge said the new site, sponsored by SABER, is an improvement from the old site, creating a centralized platform where everything is easily accessible and where other social media profiles are linked. 

RESCHEDULED FIREWORKS TOMORROW IN DANVILLE

The postponed fireworks in honor of Veteran’s Day will happen in Danville on Thursday.  According to media outlets, the fireworks were scheduled for the beginning of November, but were delayed because of the dry conditions and a county wide burn ban.  The fireworks are now scheduled for 7:15pm tomorrow on the campus of Danville State Hospital.  The celebration is set to honor the men and women who served in US Armed Services, as well as individuals who are veterans living at Danville State Hospital facility.

ACCUSED MURDERER DENIED BAIL MODIFICATION

A Lycoming County judge this week denied bail for a man accused of killing his wife and staging it like a suicide in their Trenton Avenue home.  According to North Central PA dot com, 31-year-old Dane Christofor Kay asked for a bail modification so he could be released to intensive supervision in Clearfield County.  Kay’s attorney laid out a plan in which Kay would be employed, live with his mother, wear an ankle monitor and check in with Lycoming County Adult Probation daily. Judge Ryan Tira rejected the request.  Kay is remains in custody on $250,000 monetary bail at the Lycoming County Prison.

ELDERLY MAN ROBBED OF LARGE SUM OF MONEY

An elderly man from Jersey Shore was robbed of cash and personal documents November 29th.  According to State Police, they are investigating the incident after the victim called them to report the burglary.  The 85 year old man said 150 thousand dollars was taken by one or more suspects who broke in through his front door.  If you have information about the Mifflin Township incident from the day after Thanksgiving, call Montoursville state police.

CHESAPEAKE WATERSHED COUNTIES GET GRANTS

Counties in the Chesapeake Bay watershed will receive a total of $2.6 million to support pollution reduction efforts in our region thanks to DEP funding efforts.  DEP Countywide Action Plan Implementation Grants go to Montour, Snyder, Union, Lycoming Clinton and Northumberland Counties, and will each receive funding for tree plantings, livestock crossings, and rain gardens, that can significantly reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment runoff.  Lycoming County was awarded $490,000 for local efforts.

The Clinton County Visitor’s Bureau have delivered their third installment of the series of puzzles created from local photographs of foliage and wildlife of the area.  According to the Lock Haven Express, the latest puzzle; “Majestic Elk of Clinton County, PA” can be purchased at the Clinton County Economic Partnership Building, 212 N. Jay St., Lock Haven or ordered online.  The Kettle Creek elk photo was taken by Chris Calhoun and selected through the bureau’s annual photo contest.  The office is open to customers Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4:30pm. JUDGE DECLARES MISTRIAL IN FORMER HS PRINCPAL CASE

In Lycoming County Court this week, the judge in the case against former Williamsport area high school principal Roger Weaver Freed was declared a mistrial.  According to the Sun Gazette, statements by the alleged victim in the case were made that caused Judge Eric Linhardt to make the decision.  Court records say two responses the victim made on the stand implicated Freed for not notifying authorities about information between the student and another teacher he allegedly knew as a mandated reporter.  A new jury could be picked for the trial that was supposed to continue throughout this week. 

HOMELESS MAN JAILED FOR THEFT IN M ONTOURSVILLE

An area homeless man is jailed in the Lycoming County Prison after he was arrested December 1st at the Montoursville Wal-mart for stealing over 3 thousand dollars-worth of merchandise.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 32 year old Jordan Patrick Charles gave a false identity after he was apprehended for the theft last Sunday around 10:20pm, which was discovered after he was fingerprinted.  Charles has a warrant out for his arrest in New York State for an unknown charge, but he now faces felony shoplifting and giving false ID to law enforcement.  He is being held in lieu of 50 thousand dollars bail.

CROW DISPERSAL PROGRAM STARTS IN HARRISBURG

A crow dispersal program started this week in the state’s capitol which means the Department of General Services will detonate non-lethal explosives from 5-7pm each day for about a month until the crows who cause the nuisance in Harrisburg leave the area for the season.  Crow waste in the Capital complex causes slipping hazards for pedestrians and damages buildings there.  Pennsylvania Capitol Police say they will use the U.S. Department of Agriculture-approved method of discharging exploding shells and whistling devices to deter crows from roosting, a method that not harmful to people, crows, other animals, or the environment.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA EVENT THIS SATURDAY

Wreaths Across America Central PA are gearing up for laying wreaths across the region this Saturday.  In Lycoming County, get information by going to their Facebook page and messaging Dori Rankanin, the coordinator of the local program.  In Montour County, a parade will escort 2,750 wreaths into the area Wednesday via Route 54 and Route 11, ending at East End Fire Company. The procession, featuring a tractor-trailer with police and firefighter escorts, invites the community to line the route in support.

INMATE AT FCI LEWISBURG DIES IN CUSTODY

An inmate at FCI Lewisburg was found unresponsive in the medium security prison last Thursday and died as a result of an unknown issue.  According to North Central PA dot com, prison staff attempted to resuscitate 41-year-old Jonathan Strader, but was unsuccessful, and he was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead Thursday morning.  Strader had been in Lewisburg since last May sentenced to 360 months for possession of methamphetamine in the Eastern District of Virginia – no other inmates or employees were harmed.  Autopsy and toxicology results on Strader are pending.

TWO ARRESTED FOR SEX TRAFFICKING IN TIOGA COUNTY

Two people from Mississippi are facing sex trafficking charges in Tioga County.  According to North Central PA dot com, 30 year old Craig Coins and 26 year old Aubreanna Odendahl brought a child to Pennsylvania in April of 2023 for the purpose of making child pornography.  After an investigation, members of the FBI confiscated an iPhone from the couple and charged them with conspiracy to sex traffic a minor, conspiracy to produce child pornography and more.

VOTE FOR PENNDOT’S PAINT THE PLOW

Online voting is on now through this Friday for the public to vote on seven Penn DOT plows decorated by high school students in five counties as part of the annual Paint the Plow program, a statewide outreach aimed at promoting winter driving safety and fostering student creativity.  According to PennDOT, the “Judges’ Pick” will be determined by PennDOT personnel and based on creativity and ability to incorporate the designated safety message and theme.  The public votes for the “Fan Favorite” winner.  District 2 features plows painted by students from Bellefonte schools, Galeton Area School, Sugar Valley Rural Charter School and others.  Go to penndot.pa.gov/PaintthePlow to cast your vote.  A winner in all categories will be announced this month.

SANTA MAILBOX ACCEPTING LETTERS IN RALPHO TOWNSHIP

The Santa Mailbox, sponsored by the Ralpho Township Business Association is open and receiving letters now, but it’s in a new location this year.  According to the News Item, association President Francis Berger says children have until December 20th to mail letters to Santa using the mailbox that is located next to the community Christmas tree and recycling center behind the municipal building.  Santa’s mailbox is available in partnership with the Ralpho Township supervisors and with the help of the township maintenance department.  To receive a response from Santa, please include a return address on the letter you submit.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Colorado’s two-way player Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Miami quarterback Cam Ward were named finalists for the Heisman Trophy on Monday.

The winner will be announced Saturday during a ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City starting at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Heisman Trophy is “annually awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the United States, whose performance epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.”

BRADFORD COUNTY MAN KILLED IN THANKSGIVING DAY CRASH

Information has been released about a fatal motorcycle crash that happened on Thanksgiving day in Bradford County.  According to state police at Towanda, 22 year old Briar Wright was killed in a crash in North Towanda Township at about 4am while he was traveling north on John Merrill Parkway, just half a mile east of Route 6.  Wright was wearing a helmet at the time.  The Bradford County Coroner responded to the scene along with North Towanda Fire and EMS.  A GoFundMe account has been set up in Briar’s memory by his family to help cover funeral expenses.

NURSING HOME ADMIN CHARGED WITH EMBEZZELMENT

An administrator at a Lock Haven Nursing home has been charged for his involvement in receiving kick-backs and embezzling funds from 2002 until 2022.  According to North Central PA dot com, 71 year old Paul D. Polen was employed as the chief of operations at Susque-View Home for over 34 years, and allegedly agreed with an unnamed physician to receive kickback Medicare payments through a series of arrangements in which a company managed by Polen was paid monthly by the physician.  Police say Polen and the physician conspired to embezzle over 520 thousand dollars from the nursing home. Polen could face five years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine which is the maximum penalty under federal law for conspiracy.

LOCAL CONGRESSMAN TAPPED FOR TRUMP’S PLANNED DOGE CAUCUS

Representative Dan Mueser has been tapped as a member of a caucus assigned to the new US Department of Government Efficiency.  According to a press release, Congressman Meuser says the DOGE caucus he’s involved in now is a group dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, and inefficiencies in federal agencies, all efforts led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.  Meuser said they plan to soon discuss plans for streamlining government operations, reducing bureaucracy, and preventing federal agencies from acting as an unelected fourth branch of government.

CU HOLDS FOOD FOR FINES ACROSS THREE CAMPUSES

All three Commonwealth University (CU) police departments at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield held a Thanksgiving Food for Fines event, in which parking tickets were forgiven in exchange for donated food items.  Members of the CU campus community were able to have campus parking tickets dismissed in exchange for a donation of canned food items. Each forgiven parking ticket required a donation of five items.  Officers collected 1,870 canned food items and they dismissed 374 parking tickets across all three campuses.

SUNBURY MAN AWAITS SENTENCING FOR CHILD PORN CHARGES

A man from Union County is facing prison time after pleading guilty to felony child pornography charges after police say he had unlawful contact with a minor last spring.  According to the Daily Item, 27-year-old David Brittingham of Sunbury allegedly had explicit conversations with a 14 year old girl from Mifflinburg last April and was later arrested and held in lieu of 200 thousand dollars bail.  Brittingham is in custody at Union County Jail with a sentencing date pending. 

TROOPER FINDS DRUGS IN CAR AT CLINTON COUNTY TRAFFIC STOP

Pennsylvania State police made a traffic stop in Lamar and apprehended an Ohio man attempting to transport eight pounds of marijuana on November 12th.  According to North Central PA dot com, 21 year old Julio Valdez DeLaRosa was stopped on I-80 in Clinton County for window tint and a headlight out.  State police observed a baggie with marijuana in console of the car and requested a search of the car, which was granted, after which the drugs were found in the trunk.  DeLaRosa was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession, and more. He posted $75,000 monetary bail through a bondsman in Altoona.

NEW CADETS GRADUATE FROM STATE POLICE ACADEMY IN PA

Sixty Two Pennsylvania State Police cadets have completed about 27 weeks of training and have graduated from the program at a recent ceremony Lancaster County.  According to North Central PA dot com, 171st Cadet Class is the first class to graduate from the PSP Academy without a college credit requirement for the position of trooper.  The Shapiro Administration waived the college credit requirement for applicants in August 2023.Thirteen troopers of the latest class will report to Troop F in Montoursville on December 16th.

A way to give support to the family Williamsport Bureau of Fire Lt. Michael Bastian who passed away last Monday at UPMC Williamsport has been set up in Watsontown, as well as a GoFund me account has been started by the Williamsport Bureau of Fire through Mark Killian’s Facebook Page.  Bastian was a well loved and respected member of the teams who served in Williamsport, Milton, Warrior Run and William Cameron Lewisburg Fire Department.  The Watsontown bank is accepting donations for Bastian’s young family who includes Bastian’s wife, a 1 year old and a baby on the way.  Checks can be made payable to Mariah Bastian and be sent to Susquehanna Community Bank at 1025 Main Street in Watsontown.

ESPN is reporting: Outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets have agreed to a 15-year, $765 million contract, the largest deal in professional sports history.  The deal includes an opt-out after five years and no deferred money.  If Soto chooses not to opt out, his deal will go up $4 million per year — from $51 million to $55 million — for the remainder of the contract, meaning the total value could exceed $800 million.
