JUDGE DISMISSES MURDER CHARGE AGAINST READING, PA TEEN
A judge determined there was no malice and dismissed a third degree murder charge for the Berks County teenager who police say, while driving along Route 87 in Upper Fairfield Township, caused an accident that killed a Montoursville woman. According to the Sun Gazette, the case against 18 year old Stephen Andrew Yuhasz could be moved to juvenile court if a juvenile court judge agrees to the move from the court of common pleas. Yuhaz attempted to pass Kathleen McFadden’s vehicle July 6th causing her husband, the driver, to swerve, striking another car and causing her fatal blunt force trauma. Mark McFadden sustained serious injuries in the crash. No new trial date has been set for Yuhaz.
ROW HOME FIRE IN SHAMOKIN
Three row homes caught fire Friday night in the 200 block of South Franklin Street in Shamokin and authorities are attempting to determine the cause of the blaze. According to the News Item, city fire investigators say the two-alarm blaze that was called in Friday at about 9:50pm is not suspicious, but the homes from 228 to 232 South Franklin Street were extensively damaged with the fire declared under control around 11:15pm. Employees from James’ Pizza, on the same block as the row homes, provided pizzas for the firefighters at the scene. The Red Cross provided temporary housing to the fire victims.
INFO TO BE SENT ABOUT SNAP BENEFITS SCAM
Department of Human Services officials are warning recipients of SNAP benefits that there has been fraud occurring through skimming; a subtle form of theft of card data and people’s PIN numbers at point of sale machines using tiny devices slipped over the card reader. Officials say thieves use this method to take funds and SNAP benefits, and the department will send a text message soon to SNAP benefit users addressing this matter. They say that they will not be asking for any personal information or details about your benefits, or providing any unofficial websites that do not end in dot gov. ROAD WORK IN NORRY
There will be road work in Northumberland County today. According to PennDOT, Creek Road will be closed today in Little Mahanoy Township for maintenance. Watch for the closure between Route 225 and Lower Road with a detour in place using Route 225, Route 147, Brush Valley Road and Route 890. The work is expected to be performed between 9am and 2pm with Residents, emergency response, U.S. mail, and deliveries having access to the properties.
THREE SUSPECTS IN REGIONAL THEFTS ARRESTED
A trio of thieves has been arrested by state police after an investigation into a local burglary uncovered their involvement in a rash of crimes through Clearfield, Mifflin and Clinton Counties. According to the Sun Gazette, 36 year old Anthony Harkinson, 43 year old Eric Watkins, and 31 year old Alexis Moses, of Philipsburg, Fleming and Howard respectively, were nearby or seen on surveillance video breaking into Bitner’s General Store in Lewis Township August 9th , 2023. Each have been charged with theft by unlawful taking, criminal trespass and more, and are in custody in lieu of 50 thousand dollar bail .
MILTON MAN FACES MURDER CHARGE IN SUNBURY
The preliminary hearing of the 46 year old Milton man who shot his girlfriend January 3rd is today at 1pm in Sunbury. According to the Daily Item, Jared Wolfe, was arrested shortly after he allegedly shot Jane White telling police he was afraid for his life and panicked after he smoked what he thought was marijuana at a friend’s house on Court Street. Wolfe told police he grabbed an unlicensed loaded 9 mm handgun from his vehicle and after the shooting, drove to a relative’s house on N. 5th Street who called police immediately. Wolfe is being held in the Northumberland County Jail without bail.
GLOBAL GREAT BACKYARD BIRDCOUNT NEXT WEEK
The annual Great Backyard Bird Count is coming next week and the public is invited to tally as many of the world’s bird species as they see in their yards or neighborhoods. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada, up to a half-million people participated globally during the 2024 Great Backyard Bird Count reporting almost 8 thousand species of birds from 200-plus countries and subregions. COVERED BRIDGE SOCIETY SEEKING FUNDS FOR ANNIVERSARY
A local group of covered bridge enthusiasts want to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the covered bridge located on North Fourth Street over Buffalo Creek in Mifflinburg Borough. According to the Daily Item, the Hassenplug Covered Bridge is the oldest drivable covered bridge in the United States, built around 1825. The bridge was rehabilitated by Union County residents in 1959 and 2022 and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is seeking funding and is requesting letters of support from the public.
