WATSONTOWN HOME BURNS, OWNERS ESCAPE
The owners of a two-story Watsontown home that caught fire yesterday afternoon escaped the blaze with injuries, but their home was destroyed. According to the Sun Gazette, Warrior Run Area fire officials say the windy conditions worked against the dozen fire companies who were on the scene and attempted to extinguish the fire that consumed the home, a pool house and ignited about 3 acres of brush on the property on Cronrath Road in Delaware Township. The state police fire marshal is expected to be on the scene today and work to determine the origin of the fire. Dale and Tamela Chomas were transported to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville and were treated for smoke inhalation.
ELDERLY MAN ARRESTED FOR SELLING METH TO INFORMANTS
A 70 year old man from Muncy is free on bail after police charged him with selling methamphetamine to narcotics informants two times in 2024. According to North Central PA dot com, Harold Calvin Heddings, allegedly met informants with the Lycoming County Narcotics Enforcement Unit at his home along Lycoming Mall Drive and sold baggies of meth to them. Police say a second transaction took place at a garage near his home in which Heddings exchanged meth for cash. The man posted 50 thousand dollars unsecured bail and now faces a preliminary hearing in February.
COYOTE SPOTTED IN BLOOMSBURG
Police from Columbia County were joined by Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers this week to warn the public after a coyote was seen near Fifth Street and in a playground along East 7th Street Tuesday in Bloomsburg. Game officials encouraged the coyote to leave the area, and said the animal appeared healthy. In another wildlife risk, police officials in Riverside say residents should stay away from migrating geese in case they are infected with Avian flu. But if you witness an obviously sick goose, call the PA Game Commission at 1-833-742-9453 or 911.
LANE RESTRICTIONS IN WILLIAMSPORT TODAY
Lane restrictions are planned today on Interstate 180 eastbound in Williamsport. According to PennDOT, a crew will be collecting core pavement samples near the Hepburn Street overpass. Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions between Maynard Street at mile marker 28 and the Market Street Bridge, weather permitting. Work will be performed between the hours of 9am and noon.
FATAL CRASH IN ELYSBURG
A young adult from Elysburg died in a car crash yesterday morning. According to the News Item, 19 year old Joshua Lahr was driving north on Nittany Valley Drive at 8:34am in his Subaru Forester. Lahr then struck a northbound Kenworth truck stopped in the left lane, waiting to turn left into the TruGreen Lawn Care parking lot. State police say Lahr’s Subaru came to an uncontrollable stop facing north, off the east side shoulder of Nittany Valley Drive, but the driver of the truck who is from Hazelton was uninjured.
FATAL ACCIDENT CHARGES AGAINST READING TEEN HEAD TO COURT
An 18 year old from Berks County will go to trial for a fatal crash in Upper Fairfield Township he allegedly caused, that took the life of a Montoursville woman and seriously injured her husband last July. According to the Sun Gazette, 18 year old Stephen Andrew Yuhasz of Reading, PA was in Lycoming County court yesterday for his preliminary hearing and faces charges of homicide by vehicle after police reports say he attempted to pass a vehicle on Route 87 and crossed into the lane of 69 year old driver Mark McFadden and his wife Kathleen who was the passenger. She died in the crash from blunt force trauma. Multiple counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and more were bound over for court. Yuhasz will be tried as an adult in the case.
FORMER WARD MANUAFACTURING LOOKING FOR BUYER
ASC-Engineered Solutions – the former Ward manufacturing in Blossburg is looking for a buyer or officials there say the manufacturing plant will have to close. According to North Central PA dot com, in a move that would be a huge hit to the Blossburg community, local officials have spoken up with action steps if the area does loose the employer of 340 area residents. Rep. Clint Owlett and Blossburg Borough Mayor Tim Martin have expressed the idea that the potential changes could lead to new opportunities. ASC says they will transition production to their plant in Columbia, Pennsylvania gradually throughout 2025.
CHILI COOK-OFF IN MOUNT CARMEL
The Clover Hose Company is holding a chili cook off this Saturday to raise money for local charity Mommy and Me Pet Rescue, as well as for the company’s truck fund. According to the News Item, 18 local cooks competed last year and the public is invited to submit their recipes before the event Saturday at the Clover Hose Fire Co 301 South Oak Street in Mount Carmel. It’s ten dollars to present your chili for tasting, and 5 dollars to sample the chili entries starting at 4pm – ballots are cast anonymously. There are plans for another chili-cook off event and auction later this year at Atlas American Legion.
