ATV ACCIDENT KILLS TWO
State police at Stonington say two women died in an ATV crash Sunday night in Lower Mahanoy Township around 8:30pm. According to North Central PA dot com, police were called after 43 year old Bobbie Conrad of Dalmatia, and 28 year old Maura Mengel from Mount Carmel didn’t return from their ride over several hours. Authorities searched the area and found the women who were victims of the fatal crash off of Yeagers Hill Road. Police say an investigation of the accident shows that the women may have been traveling at a high rate of speed and left the roadway, going down an embankment. The investigation is continuing.
PA ARSON SUSPECT HAS TIES TO LYCOMING COUNTY
The man accused of setting fire to Governor Josh Shapiro’s home early Sunday, 38 year old Cody Balmer, also had a PFA filed against him by his wife in Lycoming County Court in December of 2023. According to North Central PA dot com, Balmer went through the PFA and divorce proceedings in Lycoming County and they were just finalized in January. Blamer now faces domestic abuse charges as well as felonies for using Molotov cocktails when he tried to burn down the governor’s residence with Shapiro’s family inside the home. Balmer has been denied bail for the arson, terrorism, and attempted homicide charges, and is in Dauphin County Prison at this time. His court hearing for the assault charges is today, with a preliminary hearing for the arson charges on April 23rd.
ROMMELT ELEMENTARY CLOSING
The school board of South Williamsport School District voted unanimously this week to close Rommelt Elementary school. According to the Sun Gazette, there was only one vote of dissent on the reconfiguring of Central Elementary for just grades K through 5, so that 6th grade students will head to the junior/senior high school next fall. A public hearing on the closure was held in January with no public opposition. Superintendent Dr. Eric Briggs said the decision was difficult but is the fiscally responsible move for taxpayers.
SPORTSMAN’S LISTENING TOUR IS TONIGHT IN HUGHESVILLE
The third installment of the Sportsman’s Listening Tour with State Representative Joe Hamm and House Game & Fisheries Committee Chairman David Maloney is tonight at the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall. According to a press release, the free outreach event is an opportunity for hunters and anglers to provide feedback on issues that affect them. The event is tonight from 6 – 7:30 pm at 30 South Railroad Street, in Hughesville. NEW YORK MAN ARRESTED AFTER HIGH SPEED CHASE ON I-80
A New York man was arrested for leading a police chase going up to speed of 120 miles per hour and barging past a crash zone on I-80 in Union County March 28th. According to State police at Milton, 58 year old Bah Sajo of Jamaica New York sped past the multi vehicle accident in the right lane about 2:30am around mile marker 196 in a yellow Lamborghini. Troopers followed Sajo for several miles on I-80 before he came to a stop at mile marker 189 and they discovered there were four passengers in the car including a 16 year old. Police say Sajo was argumentative and that they charged him with felony fleeing as well as misdemeanors of reckless endangerment of a child, and related traffic summaries. He posted 15 thousand dollars bail.
THREE CHARGED AFTER CHILD LEFT ALONE WITH OTHER CHILDREN
An investigation initiated by Shikellamy school officials who were told by an 11 year old student that he had to care for other children while his parents worked, provided a ChildLine referral about the parents and a caregivers’ neglect. During an interview, police say 38 year old Tyquan Douglas Myrick, claimed his son was never alone with the 7 year old and infant in the home and that a caregiver, Jasmine Askew of Hazleton would watch the children overnight while the mother Jessica Nunez worked as an ICU nurse. After police got a warrant for GPS information to track the adults over a few weeks, they found Askew, Nunez and Myrick did leave the child alone with the other children. They each now face felony endangering the welfare of children charges and more. Their preliminary hearing is on April 22.
BUCKNELL ONE OF BEST MIDSIZED EMPLOYERS IN PA
In a new ranking from Forbes magazine, Bucknell University has been named one of Pennsylvania’s best midsized employers. Officials with the University say they placed seventh overall among midsized employers statewide and first among all colleges and universities. Bucknell also ranked 28th among all higher education institutions nationwide. Bucknell employs over 1,300 full-time faculty and staff.
DOCTOR TAKING A HIKE FOR CHARITY SOON
A local pediatrician is looking for support for when he takes a 331 mile Trek for Charity starting on April 27th. Dr. Colby Wesner is hoping to raise 100 dollars per mile, or 33,100 that he plans to split between two nonprofits; ThinkBIG Pediatric Cancer Fund and Hunter’s Heart & Hustle Foundation, with Hampton Consulting Corporation matching donations up to $15,000. Dr. Wesner’s nephew, Hunter Reynolds, died in an accident in February of 2022. The foundation is named for him and supports student-athletes in Central Pennsylvania.
