ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES FOR POINT TOWNSHIP COUPLE
Two people are in custody after police discovered three dead dogs outside a Point Township home and neglected dogs inside during a welfare check on the animals in February. According to the Daily Item, 42 year old Heather Russin, of Mount Carmel, and 42 year old Eric Hunter, from Northumberland were charged with a combined 44 counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals once police observed the scene. Officials called the SPCA who found three outside dogs deceased and frozen to the ground, and deplorable conditions inside where nine dogs were found emaciated and mistreated. Russin and Hunter were sent to Northumberland County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
MIDDLEBURG MAN SENTENCED FOR 7TH DUI
A man from Middleburg with a long history of DUI, has been sentenced to seven months to five years in state prison. According to court records, 64 year old Timothy Hamberger requested leniency and a county prison sentence during his trial from a February 2024 incident in which he was arrested with a blood alcohol content of .32 for his seventh DUI offense. Snyder County Judge Michael Piecuch cited Hamberger’s repeated offenses and past treatment opportunities when imposing the state prison term.
NO JAIL FOR MAN WHO DEFRAUDED 9/11 COMMISSION
The man who failed to deliver thousands of dollars-worth of apparel and custom merchandise ordered by the Lycoming County 9/11 Memorial Coalition for their annual 9/11 memorial ride pleaded no contest to the charges and will not face jail time. According to the Sun Gazette, 36 year old Michael Allen Ritter, the owner of Mike’s Custom Apparel was originally charged was charged with theft by deception and deceptive business practices in September 2023 after he did not return the funds or hand over the printed items that he had agreed to provide by August. 20th. Ritter was sentenced to one year of probation in the case, but it has come to light that he faces new theft charges for taking the money but not delivering on a 2024 shirt order for Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Co.
POP UP MEDICAL CLINIC THIS WEEKEND
A free pop up medical clinic will be at Bald Eagle Area Middle and High School this Saturday and Sunday for those who need medical, dental, or vision care. According to North Central PA dot com, Remote Area Medical’s (RAM) services prioritizes areas where residents have limited access to healthcare providers and will see patients on a first come first served basis starting at 6am each day, although patients can start parking at the site as early as midnight Friday. No insurance or identification is required for care but patients may need to choose between dental and vision services due to time constraints. Get details at ramusa.org.
UPCOMING TRIAL FOR MAN WHO PROVIDED DEADLY DRUGS
A Williamsport man is incarcerated without bail over criminal homicide charges and more, after a woman died in October of 2024 after they allegedly smoked crack cocaine together. According to North Central PA dot com, police report that witnesses said 60 year old Keith Richard Reitz was in regular contact with Nicole Bassett, of Williamsport, the night she died at the 1400 block of Alvin Avenue. Bassett’s roommate said she attempted to revive her after she became unresponsive before Reitz left the home after allegedly delivering the drug that killed her. When police arrived at the scene before 1am, Bassett was declared dead. Reitz has a preliminary hearing April 7th.
WATER UPGRADES IN NORTHUMBERLAND
A million dollar water main upgrade started in Northumberland Borough and Point Township and will last through July. According to Pennsylvania American Water the work on Queen Street includes the replacement of 2,400 feet of old pipes with new eight-inch mains. After that first phase, crews will then move to Strawbridge Road to replace a 1,500-foot section of water line. Customers may experience some changes in water color or pressure, low-pressure during construction, but the public is being asked to refrain from approaching crews while they are at the construction site.
RED CROSS CERTIFICATION AVAILABLE
The Danville Area Community Center is hosting Red Cross Lifeguard certification and recertification classes this May. According to the Daily Item, the instruction is May 16 through 18 and the certification costs $265. Current lifeguards needing renewal will pay $145 for recertification classes on May 10. The fees include includes online course work, manual, pocket mask, two-year certification in lifeguarding as well as CPR/AED and first aid certification. Call 570-275-3001 for information.
UPGRADES FOR MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY ATHELTIC FIELDS
A four million dollar renovation is coming to Mansfield University’s Van Norman Field Maxxon Track stadium complex next year. According to the school’s athletic department, the project will modernize the stadium with new artificial turf for the football field, resurfacing for Maxxon Track and upgraded seating in the stadium. Construction is expected to be complete for the start of the fall 2026 athletic season. The facility is also used for regional athletic and community events including the Tioga County Special Olympics, concerts, high school football, and track and field invitationals.
