MIFFLINBURG WOMAN FACES STRANGULATION CHARGES
A woman from Mifflinburg is facing felony charges from allegedly strangling a man March 9th after she had been drinking. According to Union County police, 33 year old Kristen Leann Moreland was questioned at her home after the alleged incident and told police she had not had a physical fight that night. Witnesses and the victim say Moreland had been drinking heavily before she punched the man in the face multiple times and wrapped her arm around his neck, compressing it. Police report Moreland resisted arrest before she was charged with felony strangulation, misdemeanor simple assault, and summary harassment. Her preliminary hearing is March 25th with bail set at 5 thousand dollars.
SUSPECT USES CINDERBLOCK TO BREAK-IN
A woman from Lycoming County is facing charges after allegedly damaging a home in Montour County by throwing a cinder block through a window. According to Pennsylvania State police at Milton, 37 year old Samantha Ashton of Williamsport attempted to break into a home at Blue Springs Terrace in Derry Township on March 16th at about 9:30am. Police were called after reports of the damage and they filed a criminal mischief citation against Ashton who has not yet entered a plea. State police did not report any injuries.
ARBOR DAY WALK IN LEWISBURG
An Arbor Day Tree Walk is planned in downtown Lewisburg April 25th. According to the Daily Item, Bucknell Biology professor and Certified Tree Expert Dr. Chris Martine will lead the walk starting and ending at Huffnagle Park before an Arbor Day ceremony starts at 4:30 p.m. The tree walk co-sponsored by the Merrill Linn Conservancy and the Lewisburg Borough Shade Tree Commission will help participants identify a number of common tree species. LADY LANCERS DELAYED FOR SEMI-FINAL GAME
Despite an accident Friday afternoon that blocked I-80 east in Hazelton and caused a 90 minute delay in getting to the girls the Class AAA state semifinals at Parkland High School, the Loyalsock Lady Lancers showed up and defeated Philadelphia area powerhouse Imhotep, 65-46. According to the Sun Gazette, when they arrived at the neutral location an hour late for the game, they were suited up and ready to play, and played with perfect effort. The two teams went back and forth in the game’s first 13 ½ minutes, but kicked off a 10-0 run which put Loyalsock up to stay. Loyalsock will head to Hershey Thursday for its first state championship appearance at the Giant Center. The Lancers (29-2) will play Shady Side.
MAN CHARGED WITH HIT AND RUN
A Cogan Station man was in court last week facing multiple hit and run charges after police say he struck several cars along Market Street in the city and fled the scene last August. According to the Sun Gazette, 49 year old Robert Jay Jeirles who was already on state parole at the time, was using his girlfriend’s car for an appointment, but allegedly went drinking afterwards. Police say they found the vehicle abandoned on Bloomingrove Road by Jeirles, whose driver’s license was suspended for a prior DUI offense. The man was found later at the liquor store and was charged with hit and run. He recently waived his preliminary hearing and is free on bail.
SHAMOKIN PARKING METER, VENDING MACHINE DAMAGED
A man from Shamokin has been charged with several misdemeanors for allegedly stealing a parking meter and damaging a vending machine. According to the News Item, police say Shane Michael Fawcett faces theft by unlawful taking charges as well as receiving stolen property for stealing the part of the parking meter with the coins in it last Friday along the first block of East Independence Street. Police also charged Fawcett with theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief for a laundromat incident on E. Independence St in January, in which he allegedly caused over 17 hundred dollars in damage to a vending machine.
PRESCRIBED FIRES COMING TO NORTH CENTRAL PA
The Pa Game Commission has put information on their website about some upcoming controlled burns in North Central PA . According to the Game Commission, a prescribed fire is an organized coordinated effort that applies fire to certain areas of the game lands to improve the health and resilience of the forests, grasslands and shrubs. State Game Lands near Bellefonte, in Colebrook Township, Clinton County, in Gregg Township, Union County as well as areas near Catawissa will be targeted. The weather will affect the timing of the burns the smoke of which will be able to be seen from a distance. Go to pa.gov under State Game Lands habitat management to get specific dates and locations of the upcoming prescribed burns.
VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY MARCH 29TH
The Muncy Historical Society will be honoring Vietnam Veterans with an open house on Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29th from 2 til 4pm. According to North Central PA dot com, the public is invited to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families at the Muncy Historical Society, 40 N. Main Street in Muncy. All US Armed Services Veterans who were on active duty from Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, are eligible to receive a government-issued lapel pin featuring an eagle representing courage, honor, and dedicated service. A representative from the Quilts of Valor Foundation will speak with guests about registering and nominating Veterans for a quilt.

* Larson fell one race short of sweeping the triple-header weekend. He won the Craftsman Truck race on Friday and finished fourth in the Xfinity Series on Saturday despite leading 132 of 201 laps.
