SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT BUS ACCIDENT
One person had minor injuries after a school bus and a van collided Wednesday morning in an accident in South Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, there were 20 students on board the school bus when it crashed with a Ford van at Hastings Street and Central Avenue. Witnesses told police the van may have gone through the red light causing the accident, the driver of which was transported to UPMC Williamsport with non-life threatening injuries. The bus driver and all the students were medically cleared for any injuries and the bus was able to be driven from the scene. The van had serious front end damage and needed to be towed.
NEW YORK COURTS ORDER PRISON STRIKES TO END
A Supreme Court judge in New York State has ordered a stop to the strikes that broke out this week at prisons across the state. According to WETM, the Correctional officers from over 20 New York Prisons were on strike since Monday which is deemed illegal under Taylor Law, and a judge granted the temporary restraining order, mandating striking correction officers to stop their strike immediately. Gov. Kathy Hochul said more than 3,500 members of the New York National Guard are reporting to correctional facilities across the state and NY State police are also assisting. The union representing the officers said the strike is not sanctioned. Those picketing say they’re worried about the shrinking of an already depleted workforce, and that they are plagued by contraband in the form of drugs and weapons.
SKI PATROL VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT IN MORRIS
There will be a ski and ride ability assessment next month at Ski Sawmill in Morris in order to add volunteer ski patrollers to their line-up. According to North Central PA dot com, interested parties who participate in the assessment on March 8th at 10am could also earn the Outdoor Emergency Care certification. The ski patrol assessment class is to show skills navigating all the terrain at Ski Sawmill in varied conditions, and prove the capability to carry an injured patient down the hill while skiing or riding with a toboggan. The class is free for those 15 and older but there are some costs for OEC study materials and certifications. Get details at skisawmill.com.
ANNUAL FUNDRAISER IN STATE COLLEGE
The THON weekend fundraiser at Penn State University’s Bryce Jordan Center will be held this weekend beginning at 6pm on Friday in State College. The 46 hour dance marathon raises funds, research and awareness efforts for Four Diamonds, a non-profit supporting children and families impacted by childhood cancer. INJURED WOMAN IN ROUTE 220 ACCIDENT IDENTIFIED
The woman who was involved in the fatal accident on 220 North Monday, and was injured by passing cars when she ran from the wreckage has been identified. According to the Sun Gazette, 53 year old Kari Greenaway of Lock Haven was the driver of the Mercedes that traveled the wrong way on Route 220 and crashed head-on with the Subaru of 38 year old Michael Kurelja, who died of blunt force trauma injuries at the scene. Greenaway was treated at UPMC Williamsport. Police continue to investigate the accident and are attempting to determine where Greenaway entered the interstate going the wrong direction.
MAN IN CUSTODY FOR ASSAULTING FOUR TROOPERS
A man facing charges for allegedly holding a woman against her will last year in Mill Hall is in custody for assaulting four state troopers February 11th. According to State police at Lamar, during a traffic stop, 42 year old Brandon Bitner exited the car with a large knife, and then attempted to set the officers on fire. Police said they then apprehended Bitner, who was charged with four counts each of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, and possessing an instrument of crime with intent. The man also will answer to the false imprisonment charges he was given in December. Bitner is in Clinton County Prison in lieu of 50 thousand dollars monetary bail.
NEW RIVER OF THE YEAR IN PA
There is a new River of the Year in Pennsylvania. According to DCNR and the Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers, the Delaware River has been named Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year. The river is home to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area which is one of the top 20 most-visited national park areas in the country. The Upper Delaware Preservation Coalition sent in the nomination, so to celebrate there will be a public paddle event in June and will receive a $15,000 Leadership Grant from DCNR and POWR. The Youghiogheny River came in second and Perkiomen Creek was third.
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA CLEANUP
Organizers of Wreaths Across America in Danville are looking for volunteers to clean up wreaths that had been previously placed across the area. According to media outlets, Wreaths Across America in Montour County are asking for volunteers to help remove wreaths from veterans’ graves as part of the annual clean-up effort March 1 at 8 a.m., at all cemeteries in Danville. 2,750 wreaths placed to honor local veterans. JDog Junk Removal will be on hand to collect and recycle the wreaths.
