BICYCLIST DIES IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING ACCIDENT WITH CAR
A man from Linden who was on a bicycle and collided with a car last Sunday, died this week from his injuries. According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office reports 31 year old Matthew Stetts was the victim in the crash at about 10:15 July 28th at West Fourth and Woodward streets in Woodward Township when police say Stetts ran a stop-sign. A woman from Jersey shore was driving a Hyundai Sonata along West Fourth and collided with Stetts before he was rushed to UPMC Williamsport where he was treated in the Intensive Care Unit before he passed away Tuesday.
FATHER OF INFANT INJURES BABY AND MOTHER
A 10-month old infant was hospitalized after the baby’s father swung his head into a wall. According to North Central PA dot com, the father of the child, 33 year old Darsean Eugene Mosley, got into an altercation with the child’s mother on July 19th at a home on West Fourth Street. Mosley allegedly began swinging at the woman and then bumped the infant’s head off the wall. After receiving a call from the disturbance, city police arrested Mosley who fled the scene with the woman’s phone. The baby and mother were hospitalized for their injuries. Mosley faces charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, endangering the welfare of children, and evading arrest amongst others and posted at $95,000 bail.
WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED IN LYCO COUNTY MOSQUITOES
After mosquitoes were collected and tested in Lycoming County, officials from the state Department of Environmental Protection Vector Management, have determined 15 samples have tested positive for the West Nile virus. According to a news release, Lycoming County Conservation District Office say additional testing and sample collection will continue. They recommend residents eliminate yard clutter and reduce standing water areas – such as buckets of rainwater or discarded tires, as well as to use repellant products for mosquito control. May through October, mosquitoes can complete their life cycle within five to seven days. Local municipalities are encouraged to promote clean-up events in their communities.
SUNFLOWER MAZE TO DONATE PARTIAL PROCEEDS
A local sunflower maze business will donate 10 percent of their proceeds this summer to local medical centers the Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport and the Ronald McDonald House in Danville. According to the Dotterer Grown Facebook page, the maze is located along Nittany Valley Drive in Mill Hall will be open for the next two weeks weather permitting. They have included various medical symbols in this year’s 18 acre maze. Maps of the maze are available at the farm and assistance is available for visitors.
WOMAN WITH A KNIFE CHASES ANOTHER TO A TWO STORY FALL
An argument in a Jersey Shore that escalated over cleaning up after a dog led one woman to be arrested and another to be treated in the emergency room. According to the Sun Gazette, 24 year old Elda Baptiste charged another woman with a knife during an argument in a home last Wednesday forcing her to jump from a 2nd story window, which broke her ankle. Baptiste was arrested at the scene, arraigned and charged with aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment. She was committed to Lycoming county prison in lieu of $20,000 bail.
CORONOR FACILITY BIDS DISCUSSED
Bids for a new Lycoming County Coroner’s office were discussed during the city council meeting last week. The current Lycoming county morgue is also a shared space with UPMC Williamsport which they say can cause complications as far as storage for the deceased as well as temporary space needed during investigations and before funeral arrangements. The new coroner’s office will have more room for storage concerns. City officials hope the new building will open by early 2025.
ELECTRIC GRID GRANTS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES
The Shapiro Administration is giving over $15 million in grants to support rural electric grids. According to North Central PA, the 2024 Pennsylvania Grid Resilience Grants will provide the funding needed to improve the reliability of rural electric grids across the commonwealth. Acting DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley says these investments will shorten and prevent outages and build a more reliable power system for rural Pennsylvanians. 18 counties and over 57,000 people will see the benefits of these grants. Gov. Shapiro’s energy plan is set to create more than 14,500 energy jobs and lower utility bills for Pennsylvania households.
SCHOOL PROGRAM STARTS FOR SCHOOLS THROUGH WEIS MARKETS
Weis markets has started registration for their fifth annual Weis 4 School program. The program raises funds for pre-K through eighth grade schools in Weis Markets’ seven-state market area. Schools can register to become recipients of customer donations through qualified purchases. Schools can register through October 31st – with the program continuing all year through April 2025. American Noah Lyles is the “world’s fastest man”. He walked away with his first Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter final with a personal-best 9.784-second on Sunday night at the Stade de France. He beat Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, by 0.005 of a second. This ends a 20-year American gold medal drought in the event.
