HEAT ADVISORY THIS WEEK
The heat arrives today for an extended period of possibly record high temperatures and humidity with an official advisory in place through Thursday from the National Weather Service. Residents are advised to check on neighbors and family members who may be elderly or experience health complications to make sure they are in cool or air conditioned environments. Public places such as libraries are easy alternatives to spend time in an air conditioned place. Specifically, Mitch Alday the assistant director of the Snyder County Libraries say all of their branches have air conditioning in case anyone is searching for relief from the heat. Residents who must be outdoors are reminded by the Red Cross to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks. The public is also reminded to never leave pets or small children in a hot vehicle even for a few moments.
DISCARDED GUN FOUND IN SUSQUEHANNA
State police at Milton found a firearm in the Susquehanna River in Union County and are seeking information about it. According to Troopers, the gun was found under the Route 44 bridge in Gregg Township, on the eastern side of the river near Dewart. If anyone has information about the gun found on June 14th, should call State police 570 524-2662.
ACCIDENT ON I-80 WEST MONDAY
The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for a few hours yesterday in Turbot Township after a tractor-trailer that went out of control hit some parked vehicles along the roadway at 4:30pm. According to state police, a driver from New Jersey drifted off the roadway and collided with a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer parked along the shoulder with two men there working on a tire-change. One of the men was transported from the scene with minor injuries. The New Jersey driver is facing at-fault charges from the accident. According to PennDOT, I-80 westbound fully reopened after 8pm.
HAM RADIO EVENT IN MONTOURSVILLE
This weekend, there will be an annual national event for thousands of Ham radio operators in the US and Canada with a local opportunity. According to the Sun Gazette, operators from the Bald Eagle Repeater Association in conjunction with American Radio Repeater League, will gather in Indian park in Montoursville Saturday from 2pm until dark to participate in a national ham radio exercise that has been organized as an annual amateur radio activity since 1933 by The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States. HIGH SPEED CHASE LEADS TO ARREST IN SHAMOKIN
A motorcyclist from Sunbury was charged in May for leading police on a high speed chase. According to state police at Milton, they attempted to stop 43-year-old Ali Martin after he allegedly committed a traffic violation in Northumberland. Martin fled the scene at high speeds and troopers from Stonington and Milton apprehended him a short time later. Martin of Sunbury is facing charges of fleeing and eluding police, suspicion of DUI, driving while DUI suspended as well as multiple summary violations.
WEST MILTON MAN ARRESTED IN WALMART PARKING LOT
A man from West Milton was arrested after he was seen on video urinating on a vehicle in the parking lot of the Lewisburg Walmart. According to state police they were called to the store on June 10th for reports of indecent exposure, but when they looked at the video, it confirmed the actions of 76 year old Dennis Schwartz, and a 17 year old man was the victim. Schwartz was charged with summaries of public drunkenness and disorderly conduct with a preliminary hearing on July 11th.
FORMER JS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SUES OVER CIVIL RIGHTS
A federal lawsuit has been filed by a former athletic director at Jersey Shore Area School District citing a hostile work environment and dismissal over being a woman. According to the Sun Gazette, Serena Pfaff-Henry who was hired by the school in 2019, accuses the Superintendent, Dr. Brian Ulmer of disparate treatment and violating her civil rights. In a statement by the district, Pfaff-Henry was dismissed from her position based on four incidents in which the school board acted because they have a right to remove her based on reported incompetence, improper conduct or neglect of duty. Pfaff-Henry requested a jury trial with Chief U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann.
LUDO WILL PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR SOME INMATES
During the Prison Board meeting in June, it was decided that Ludo the Lycoming County Facility Dog will make visits to the county’s Pre-Release Center on a regular basis, if available. According to the Sun Gazette, Warden Brad Shoemaker said a recent request by a resident at the center, showed that Ludo as an emotional animal worked out well in that instance, and is a valid program to continue for the inmates. Ludo and his owner, Jerri Rook will make it a regular part of the dog’s work. The next prison board meeting is July 12th at the Third Street Plaza at 8:30pm.
