INVESTIGATION INTO NESCOPECK FIRE CONTINUES
The criminal investigation continues into the house fire on First Street in Nescopeck that killed 10 family members last Saturday, and two of the victim’s funerals are being planned for this Sunday . According to media outlets, three adults did escape the blaze and police say one person was taken into custody the morning of the fire. State police fire marshals are calling the incident a complex criminal investigation, but have not released any information about the details of the blaze or what may have started it.
NO VOTE YET ON REGIONALIZATION
The Old Lycoming Township supervisors did not take a vote on any regionalization issues at their meeting this week, that witnesses say was contentious. According to the Sun Gazette, community members who attended the meeting came with questions about getting transparent details about the merging of their township police with the Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police. Township officials addressed the allegations of giving misinformation to the public on the issue, defending the accepted formulas they used for gathering information about the community. A special community at large session is expected to be arranged soon at the volunteer fire station on Dewey Avenue.
FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH THIS YEAR AT WASD
There will be free breakfast and lunch for all students in the Williamsport Area School District during the upcoming school year. According to the Sun Gazette, the district is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision program through the US Department of Agriculture. Families will be asked to fill out a household information survey, but it is not contingent upon getting the free meals. Information will come home with students August 29th when Williamsport starts.
PLENTY OF DOE TAGS IN SOME COUNTIES, NONE IN OTHERS
Only 11 counties around Pennsylvania are sold out of antlerless deer tags, just a week away from the start of the third round of license sales on August 15th. According to huntfishpa dot com, Adams, Allegheny, Beaver, Bradford, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Huntingdon, Tioga, Washington and York all have more than 10,000 permits remaining with some counties in need of substantial herd reductions. Hunters who have yet to purchase a regular doe license may apply to any county with remaining permits. The antlerless deer season will run Dec. 13-15, but this year is a Nov. 18-20 antlerless-deer-only hunt in SRA counties for flintlock hunters.
WOMAN JAILED AFTER LEG HOLD ASSAULT
A woman who misidentified herself to police, has been arrested for assault after breaking her boyfriend’s his ribs while in a leg hold on the morning of August 2nd. According to North Central PA dot com, Elizabeth Michell Stammer who originally told State police in Selinsgrove another name, allegedly had been drinking heavily, and at a Shamokin Dam hotel, threatened to beat her accuser, ultimately knocking the man to the floor during the assault, The victim who was later hospitalized, managed to flee the room and call for help. Stammer was charged with felony aggravated assault and strangulation, plus other misdemeanors. She is in Snyder County Prison in lieu of 50 thousand dollars bail.
BLOOMSBURG ACCIDENT SENDS TWO TO THE HOSPITAL
There was a two-vehicle accident near the off ramp at Route 61 and Route 901 this week that sent two people to the hospital. According to the News Item, 32 year old Sarah Hepler of Bloomsburg attempted to cross the intersection around 6pm Monday in a Northumberland County Children and Youth Services van, when she drove into the path of a car driven by 31 year old Kevin Kost, crashed and overturned. Both Kost and his passenger, 28 year old Bryanna Aucker were hospitalized. Hepler was evaluated, but declined treatment at the scene.
FETTERMAN BACK OUT ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL
Following a private fundraiser in Philadelphia two weeks ago, Pennsylvania Lt Gov John Fetterman has planned his first rally since a stroke sidelined him last spring. He will hold the event this Friday night August 12th at the Bayfront Convention Center 5:30pm to 7:30pm. According to North Central PA dot com, Fetterman may not have been campaigning actively in these past few months, but he has had a presence on social media and local television with a series of ads targeting Dr. Mehmet Oz, a long-time New Jersey resident who is the Republican nominee running for the same PA Senate Seat vacated by Republican Senator Pat Toomey.
NEW ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL AT MONTOURSVILLE
There will be a new principal at the Loyalsock Valley Elementary School for the upcoming school year in the Montoursville School District. According to the Sun Gazette, Tyler Blaise is a native of Upstate New York with nine years experience teaching and as a principal in Virginia. He replaces former principal Jamie Yonkin who was hired by the Loyalsock Township School District.
