JAIL FOR COVID CARD COUNTERFEITER
A Union County woman could face up to 6 months in jail and five thousand dollars in fines for allegedly printing COVID-19 vaccination report cards. According to the Sun Gazette, Amy B. Leister made an impression of the ID card and logo of the US Department of Health and Human Services around May 17th without authorization and was charged with making or possessing unauthorized ID cards. According to court records, Leister said she would plead guilty to the charges.
THREE ESCAPE WOODWARD TOWNSHIP FIRE
A Woodward township family escaped serious injury after their home on McGill Hollow Road was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. According to the Sun Gazette, a couple and their one year old child ran from the home after discovering the living room on fire after midnight. Twelve volunteer fire companies responded to the two alarm blaze at the 17th century home, and struggled to have the water they needed since crossovers have been taken away by construction on Route 220. The cause of the fire is as yet undetermined but fire officials said there was nothing about it that appeared suspicious.
MORE FENTANYL IN PA THAN HEROIN NOW
In a special report from the Office of the Attorney General, fentanyl has surpassed heroin as Pennsylvania’s most dominant opioid drug. In the report, Pennsylvania’s AG Josh Shapiro says that police seized more fentanyl last year than in the last four years combined. Other statistics say that 15 Pennsylvanians die every day from overdoses. Fentanyl is a completely synthetic drug that bears similarities to heroin, but is significantly more potent. Cheap illegal manufacturing of the drug can cause a variance in potency ranging from . 2 milligrams to over 5 in one dose. 2 milligrams is potentially lethal to humans.
PA SENATE RACE HEADS FOR OFFICIAL RECOUNT
Pennsylvania’s Acting Secretary of State Leigh M. Chapman announced that the race for the GOP nod in the US Senate between David McCormick and Mehmet Oz will officially be headed for a recount after the tally between the two candidates has shrunk to less than 1000 ballots and official counts trickle in from each of the counties in the Commonwealth. According to state law, if the votes come within .5% of each other, an automatic recount is ordered. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, about 6,000 mail ballots had yet to be tallied only about 1,200 of those were from Republicans. Before the June 7th deadline, all elections officials across the state will run all ballots through different scanning machines than during the election to come up with an official tally.
ADAMS COUNTY MAN KILLED BY TREE IN JERSEY MILLS
A man from Abbotstown was killed by a large tree that fell on him while he was working on his Jersey Mills property either Monday or Tuesday of this week. According to the Sun Gazette, 66 year old Joseph Shoemaker was found by a friend who had arrived late Tuesday to stay with him on Old Post Office Road in McHenry Township, but hadn’t realized Shoemaker wasn’t in the cabin. Police discovered Shoemaker had been working alone and was struck and trapped by a large tree he was cutting nearby. The Lycoming County Deputy coroner Jerold Ross pronounced him dead Wednesday around 6:15 of blunt force trauma.
NEW BERLIN MAN WITH WARRANTS RESISTS ARREST
A man from New Berlin was arrested last month after he pushed a state trooper who was trying to arrest him for outstanding warrants. According to North Central dot com, police say they responded to a call where 38 year old Ilya Mironenko allegedly created a disturbance at one Buffalo Township business and then was questioned by police later at a nearby produce auction. When it was discovered that Mironenko had active warrants against him and police attempted to take him into custody, he resisted arrest. He was charged with misdemeanors of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and has a preliminary hearing May 31st.
HIGH SPEED CHASE IN JACKSON TOWNSHIP
Two motorcyclists were arrested last Monday after they sparked a high speed chase with Selinsgrove State Troopers. According to law enforcement reports, the names of the two riders have not been released, but they were taken into custody after they refused to pull over for police in Jackson Township in Snyder County. The two were originally caught on radar on Route 204 and were apprehended after a brief pursuit by police.
NEW ASSISTANT SUPER IN JERSEY SHORE
The Jersey Shore School Board voted in favor of a new assistant superintendent of the School district on Monday. According to the Sun Gazette, Dr. Laura Osenbach, a former teacher with Bachelor and Master’s degrees in education and a Doctorate from Immaculata University in educational leadership, will replace Dr. Ken Dady who resigned to relocate as superintendent of the Mifflinburg School District. Osenbach is a Williamsport native and her contract with the district runs through June 30, 2026.
